Store owner chases down suspected thief

A Columbus business owner, with the help of two men working in the area, chased down a man he thought stole an item from his store.

Michael Sample, 20, of Columbus, was arrested Thursday afternoon on a preliminary charge of theft after he reportedly stole a plastic container of lye powder from the Country Bins store at Road 550N and U.S. 31.

Lye is a chemical substance with a variety of uses, such as an oven cleaner and drain opener.

Jim Ogilvie, who owns the Country Bins store, said Sample looked suspicious when he came through the door, and he asked Sample if he could help him. Sample told him he was looking to buy something for his father.
