Witness: Akers easily angered

VERNON — Jurors in the retrial of a Commiskey man accused of killing his mother’s ex-husband are expected to begin deliberating Monday afternoon.

Stephen L. Gilmore, 59, is accused of fatally shooting Billy Akers in February 2005.

Special Prosecutor Barry Brown rested his case before noon Friday, after two and a half days of presenting evidence and witnesses against Gilmore.

Brown, a former Monroe County prosecutor, was appointed to the case because Jennings County Prosecutor Alan Marshal represented Gilmore in his original murder trial in 2005. That trial resulted in a not guilty verdict on a murder charge and a hung jury on the lesser charge of reckless homicide.

Gilmore is accused of shooting Akers outside the home of Beverly Akers, Gilmore’s mother and Akers’ ex-wife, during a fight between the two men stemming from a disagreement over a water line.
