Frank Lee Jewell, 89, went to be with the Lord on August 18, 2012 after a brief stay at the Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
Mr. Jewell, a lifelong Columbus resident, was born on October 18, 1922, and was the ninth of 10 children. He was a proud member of the 1938 Rockcreek champion basketball team and attended Columbus High School until enlisting to serve in World War II. He joined the U.S. Navy and served honorably from 1942 to 1944 in the North African Campaign.
He married Ruth (Christian) Jewell on February 16, 1943. The two shared a love for traveling and visited 48 states and all providences in Canada. Mr. Jewell was self-employed and worked as a carpenter and building contractor. A nature enthusiast, he enjoyed cutting wood and spending time outdoors, raising cows, sheep, rabbits, chickens and peacocks on his farm.
Mr. Jewell read the newspaper every day from cover to cover and read his Bible faithfully. He attended Bible Holiness Church in Seymour for more than 30 years.
As a child during the Great Depression, Mr. Jewell experienced many of the hardships life can bring and during his adult life, was committed to giving to those in need, including many cancer organizations, disaster relief efforts and a number of Christian missionaries and mission groups.
The last of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by his parents, William Garnet and Della (Patterson) Jewell and nine brothers and sisters, Ira Jewell, Arthur Jewell, Roscoe Jewell, Paul Jewell, Carl Jewell, Mary Luther, Ruth King, Viola Weekly and Betty Gray.
Mr. Jewell is survived by his children, Timothy (Susie) Jewell, Asenath (Bud) Coombs, Mark (Shelly) Jewell, Phillip (Kimberly) Jewell and Libby (Bobbie K Owens) Jewell; and grandchildren, Jan Smith, Jeff Jewell, Jennifer Albert, Scott Coombs, Don Coombs, Amy Coombs Hood, Katie Jewell, Chris Jewell, Hayley Jewell, Kyle Jewell, Ale Owens DesJean and Carleigh Owens. Mr. Jewell has 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, Hospice of South Central Indiana or the American Cancer Society.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Stuart officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
