William Joseph Murphy, 70, of Shelbyville, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Major Hospital.

Bill was a lifelong resident of the Shelbyville area and retired in 2004 after working in counter sales at Sears, Carter Lumber and Hoosier Plumbing. He also had been a factory worker at KCL Corp., Tokheim and Overhead Door.

He was a 1960 graduate of Waldron High School and was a member of Flat Rock Christian Church and West Street United Methodist Church, Norristown Masonic Lodge No. 147, Flat Rock Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star No. 473, Scottish Rite of Indianapolis and American Legion Post No. 70. He was an EMT with Manilla Volunteer Fire Department and a 14-year veteran of the Indiana National Guard.

Bill loved serving as an EMT and talking to friends and strangers. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home, 437 Amos Road, Shelbyville, with the Revs. Ray Wilkins, Jerry Crouse and Carl Ewick officiating. Calling will be from 1 p.m. until service time Sunday. A Masonic and Eastern Star memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Shelby County Cancer Association.

Born in Columbus Oct. 3, 1941, Bill was the son of William Burton and Frances Murphy Burton. At age 2, he was adopted and raised by his Aunt Dorris A. Murphy. He married Cindy L. Adams May 23, 1965.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Walter A. Murphy (fiancee Tana Mansfield) of Brookston, IN, and John A. Murphy of Shelbyville; and four grandchildren, Ariana and Rhegan Murphy, Joshua and Rebecca Murphy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and adoptive parent.
